Nazarbayev University ensures that all new construction and renovation projects comply with the national legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan on energy efficiency and sustainable development. The university fully adheres to domestic laws and technical norms that mandate high performance in energy use, emissions, and material standards.

SNiP RK 4.02-01-2011 – Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
Article 11: Establishes mandatory energy performance requirements for buildings
Since its establishment, NU has constructed and renovated over 20 buildings, totaling more than 120,000 m² in built area. All projects are implemented under the supervision of the Facility Construction Directorate and are developed in accordance with Kazakhstan’s national energy efficiency framework.
In line with approved technical documentation and where applicable, the following measures have been applied:
  • Thermal insulation systems in accordance with SP RK 2.04-101-2013
  • Double-glazed windows designed to reduce heat loss
  • Centralized HVAC systems in academic and residential buildings
  • LED lighting systems in classrooms and corridors
  • Motion sensors in selected public areas to optimize energy use
  • Use of Kazakhstan-produced construction materials, confirmed via state expertise
In May 2017, NU transitioned its heating system from diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG). This shift resulted in:
  • Annual savings of 63.1 million KZT
  • Improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions
  • No significant capital investment, as existing equipment was adapted for gas

This project supports Kazakhstan’s “Green Economy” policy and demonstrates the university’s institutional commitment to cleaner fuels.
In addition to gasification, NU has introduced solar thermal technologies as part of its campus decarbonization strategy:
Pilot project (2022–2023):

  • 17.5 kW solar thermal collectors + hybrid heat pump
  • Zero gas consumption from May to October
  • Annual CO₂ emissions reduced by 5.9 tons
Expansion in 2024:

  • Solar Thermal Station for 20 townhouses
  • 100% solar hot water coverage (warm season)
  • Gas savings: 10,280 m³/year
  • Digital monitoring via RETS sensors and Siemens PLC
  • Integrated into educational programs and student internships
